A storm of criticism has been ignited by Erica Robin‘s representation of Pakistan in the Miss Universe Pakistan beauty competition. Conservative voices in the nation have been particularly upset by the choice and have taken offence at the organisers for allowing Robin to participate, apparently without the nation’s approval.
In a pageant held in the Maldives, Robin, a 25-year-old Christian from Karachi, defeated four other contestants to win the title of Miss Universe Pakistan. She triumphed against competitors Heera Inam (24), Jessica Wilson (28), Malika Alvi (19), and Sabrina Waseem (26).

Later this year, she will compete in the Miss Universe competition as Pakistan’s representative. This is the first time Pakistan has sent a representative to the tournament in its 72-year existence.
R’Bonnie Gabriel, the winner of Miss Universe 2022, will crown her successor at Miss Universe 2023, which will take place in El Salvador in November.
Erika Robin said when asked about her goals for Pakistan during the selection process that she wanted to transform people’s perceptions of it as a backward nation.
Her nomination has, however, led to a response that is consistent with the preconceptions she aims to debunk.

Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, has requested that Pakistan’s intelligence agency open an inquiry into the competition’s organisers to see how they were able to do so under Pakistan’s name and without the country’s consent.
The entire affair, according to Kakar, was a “shameful conduct” that “insulted and exploited the ladies of Pakistan.”
Erica Robin responded to the uproar by expressing how thrilled she was to represent Pakistan and how perplexed she was by the reaction.
“Being able to represent Pakistan is wonderful. But I’m not sure what’s causing the response. That, I believe, is the concept behind my march in a room full of guys while wearing a bikini.”
